Different Leadership Styles:

  • You attract from within. You attract who you are. Self leadership has to come first.
  • You do not have to have a title or position to be a leader. And a title or position of authority doesn’t make you a leader.
  • Don’t get stuck with the false notion that you have to pick ONE leadership style and that it defines you.
  • When you are exposed to different leadership styles and you experience them you can then turn around and implement them.
  • Leadership is influence. You can influence someone from the humane side or from the inhumane side.

There’s a difference between leadership and management.

- Leadership is people. You lead people.

- Management is for things. You manage commodities.

  • Too many people try to manage people and treat them like commodities. That’s where the breakdown happens.

Servant Leadership:

  • There’s a difference between a Public Servant and Servant Leadership.
  • True servant leadership is about seeing the needs of someone else and contributing to them and their needs.
  • Servant leadership is like making a cake. You need to have various different ingredients and leadership styles.
  • You have to have a variety of tools to be able to apply to various circumstances.

Finding A Leadership Style That Works:

  • To be a good leader you have to be a student of leadership and have continued personal development.
  • Bad leaders make you feel bad. Good leaders make you feel good.
  • Good leaders lead by example and behavior.
  • Keep a leadership journal of all the things you’ve experienced from your leaders that you’ve liked or did not like.
  • People don’t necessarily do things because “they have to”. It’s not enough of a motivating factor.
  • Leadership doesn’t require micro managing. It requires trust and supervision of those you are leading.

Watch the recap below:

Individualized Leadership:

  • G-d fixes his leadership style to what we as individuals need.
  • People make look the same and be performing similar jobs. But each person has their own individual personality.
  • Your leadership personality will resonate differently with each of the members of the people you’re leading.
  • A good leader has to take the time to learn how those they lead operate and what speaks to them.
  • 5-10 Minutes of speaking to those you’re leading and asking them about what they like and dislike about their job will go a long way.

Applying Leadership Style:

  • Invest time in the people you are leading.
  • See those you lead as important individuals.
  • Leadership starts with yourself.
  • You need to own your mistakes. If you can do that people will respect you. And then learn from your mistakes.
  • Learn through seeing and reading and then applying.
  • Ask those you lead for feedback.
  • Leadership involves human behavior. And you have to understand human behavior to be a leader.

The Bottom Line:

The 3 main takeaway points were:

  • To be a good leader, one must dig within themselves and become hyper-self-aware.
  • There is no one style that works - a good leader knows how to apply themselves to the surroundings and circumstances that they find themselves in.
  • A great leader listens, pays attention, and leads based on how the people need him or her to lead
