Introduction:

Spirituality is one of those topics that can get very controversial very quickly. As you will see from this recap and from our conversation on the different platforms, did indeed stir the pot just a little. However, spirituality is an incredibly important discussion to be had, mainly because there are so many misunderstandings around its meaning and its purpose. What does spirituality actually mean? What does it take for a person to be spiritual? How does spirituality tie into our personal and professional lives, and finally how does it play into our ultimate success in life?

In this week’s episode, we explored the key differences between spirituality and religion and we discussed what is this hunger that people are always running after?

Come join us on the journey to discover how spirituality plays into our life in this week’s episode and discussion.

Connection to Greek Mythology:

What is Spirituality?

  • We adopt “religion” as the basis of our spiritual identity.
  • Religion ends being about how to culture us and get us to fit into a specific culture vs how we can feel fulfilled.
  • Scott mentions the idea of an individual being spiritually empty
  • Just because organized religion doesn’t work for some people doesn’t mean it can’t work for others. Plenty of people are able to have transcendence and transformation through organized religion.
  • Prayer was created out in the fields. We connect with G-d in the fields and in nature. Because spirituality is about connecting.

Experiencing Spirituality:

  • There’s good in organized religion such as community and connection. The bad is on the EGO and control - that feeds spiritual emptiness.
  • Spirituality is an intrinsic connection with something bigger and greater than you.
  • Being spiritual is like being in the currents of a river and accepting that the river will take you where you need to go even if you don’t know all the different pathways.
  • Spirituality is knowing who you are, knowing yourself, and your superpowers.
  • Spirituality is self oriented with an absence of narcissism.

How To Become Spiritual?

  • Organized Religion - Questioning for Clarity
  • Everything needs to be questioned in order to find spirituality.
  • Spirituality requires intellectual questioning.
  • In order to become spiritual, you have to be able to engage the intellectual understanding. But you also have to understand that you can’t understand everything about spirituality.

[Editor’s note: In the video, Scott references the Christain’s Old Testament Bible to Judges 2:19, he later sent us a correction that it was meant to be 1:19]

Questioning and challenging leads to spirituality:

  • Ethics and values are what we should be questioning to understand our spiritual identity.
  • Skills/Talents + Experience x Service = Purpose - Scott Mason’s formula for Success.
  • Purpose alone isn’t enough. We need to have core values as well.
  • Spirituality is purpose pushed out into the world and connected to core values which we question as well.
  • Being human means disagreeing. Being G-dly means being able to disagree but still be respectful.
  • Is there a boundary beyond which tolerance can not go?
  • We need to have healthy boundaries which we set.

How Does Spirituality Play Into Success?

  • When you’ve truly connected to your spirituality and can sit in the current of the river, the cosmos and universe will bring you success. In other words, if you are on the right path, success will follow and favor you.
  • Even just being able to sit in the river, that is the definition of success
  • It’s easy to get trapped into accepting your own definition of success or the definition of success given by others as an adequate substitute for what G-d or the universe wants of you.
  • Purpose + Values = Spiritual Connection
  • Listen to the voice inside. That’s G-d speaking
  • Success is being connected to your purpose and values.

The Bottom Line:

The 3 main takeaway points were:

  • Spirituality is the personal connection with something greater than oneself
  • Being truly connected in an intrinsic way and by being connected to a source
  • Not always do we agree with everyone or the way they serve their purpose, but we can respect, admire, and celebrate one another - that’s true spirituality.
